Some commentators have indicated that, in the Book of Rashi, the rabbi is the author and has a prerogative to authorise what happens. The Lubavitcher Rebbe insists on this point of view and one may be tempted to agree with him.

How then should we use them? They can help us develop a deeper relationship with God and a deeper appreciation of the spiritual guidance God has provided. They can deepen our understanding of the relationships between God and humanity, the supernatural and the mundane.
By adopting the teachings of the Torah they can also strengthen our grasp of religious values and principles. By applying the teachings of the Torah they can also realize more fully the significance of their religious beliefs.
If the Book of Rashi can be called an open book, the Book of God can be considered as an open book. This could be a further indication that the Torah of God is a religious text, revealed by God to His prophet and designed to instruct His people.
It must be remembered that in our day, not all rabbinic literature is written by rabbis for rabbis. It is true that some authors are concerned primarily with writing books that will appeal to their intended readers, and if they are active rabbis, they write for this reason alone.
However, it is doubtful that Rabbi Eliezer ben Hillel or Rabbi Eliezer would object to the idea that the Book of Rashi is an open book. Whether written by a rabbi or a layperson, the Book of Rashi will always serve the highest cause – that of the development of a closer relationship with God.
